True Heroes

Medical Dog Assistance

Mrs. Candace Lines began choking on her food and was unable to speak. The family’s German Shepherd, Samantha, is trained to assist her in completing daily tasks such as opening the refrigerator door and helping during times of need. Samantha reacted quickly and fearlessly by pushing the medical pendant alarm that saved Mrs. Lines’ life.

MONI Operator, Iliana Ibanez Rodriguez answered the call and took what she could hear on the other end as the warning needed to contact emergency personnel on behalf of Mrs. Lines. This qualified her to become the first recipient of the Hero Award. The Hero Award recognizes MONI Emergency Dispatch Operators who do their part in saving lives and property through home monitoring. The Alarm Response Centerpresented Iliana with a signed certificate of appreciation from MONI executives as well as a new ID badge and polo shirt displaying the Hero Award logo.

Later, MONI spoke with Mrs. Lines, “I could hear the dispatcher asking if I needed help but I could not speak,” she said. “When the paramedics showed up, I knew the quick response by MONI and Ms. Rodriguez saved my life. I can’t thank them enough for being there when I needed them most.”

Medical Monitoring Makes a Difference

Elderly Woman in Wheelchair

A MONI operator received a medical alarm from the Coe residence. The operator called over the intercom system and learned that Ms. Coe had fallen from her wheelchair and injured her head and back. Without delay, dispatch was notified while the operator remained on the intercom with our frightened customer. Within just a few minutes the paramedics arrived and MONI ended the call knowing Ms. Coe was in good hands.

MONI spoke to Ms. Coe later. “I’m 71 years old and I live alone," she said. "I lost my balance, fell hard and hurt my back and hit my head. Thank goodness I was wearing my medical pendant as a bracelet because all I could do is move one finger to press the button. I was so relieved when I heard a voice asking me if I needed help."

She was treated at the hospital and released. "Thankfully I had no serious injuries and nothing is broken," Coe said. "I’m so glad to have MONI. The thought of needing help and not being able to get to a phone is very scary.

Quick Response Saves Lives and Property

Firefighter Emergency Response

A customer from Live Oak, CA experienced first hand that emergency response time could be the difference between containing a fire or having your house burn down. Ms. Gauthier was at home completing all her weekend chores so her Sunday would be a day of rest. Around 4:30 p.m. Ms. Gauthier heard the washer stop and went to the back porch to put the clothes in the dryer. She started the cycle, then went back to the rest of her duties.

At MONI, an Emergency Dispatch Operator received a hallway fire alarm from the Gauthier residence. She quickly accessed the intercom and an out of breath Ms. Gauthier answered, “My dryer is on fire!” The operator instantly said, “Leave the house and I’ll dispatch the fire department.”

However, the customer hesitated, trying to learn more about the fire. She began to cough and choke from the smoke, and the MONI agent urged her to leave the house immediately.  At that point, Ms. Gauthier agreed and went outside to wait for the fire department.

Within minutes, the fire department and an ambulance met Ms. Gauthier on the front lawn. She informed them of the fire location and the fireman found the porch totally engulfed in flames. As black smoke filled the house, the firemen battled the blaze and were successful in keeping the fire from spreading.

After the Emergency, MONI followed up with Ms. Gauthier. “The fire in the dryer started at the back wall," she said. "There was significant damage, but I’m so grateful my house was saved!” She also noted that “the operator who called me on my fire alarm treated me wonderfully. She convinced me I needed to get out of the house. I’m very satisfied with my alarm and the service I received. Thank you and great job!”
